The Origin of ABC Reading Eggs: How One Little Egg Hatched a World of Readers
The story of ABC Reading Eggs begins with a child’s first spark of recognition, the moment when they begin to crack the reading code. When the team behind ABC Reading Eggs set out to create a program that would nurture early literacy, they were searching for something that symbolised beginnings, growth and possibility. They imagined that moment when a child begins to crack the code of reading—letters turning into sounds, words and meaning.
What better symbol for this emergence than an egg? An egg is simple and unassuming, but inside, there’s magic waiting to hatch. And so, ABC Reading Eggs was born—a name that captures the very essence of reading as something that emerges, grows and transforms a child’s world.
Then along came Reggie—the Reading Egg himself. With his round, cheerful form and a cheeky smile, Reggie embodies everything about early reading: joy, curiosity, and the thrill of discovery. “Reggie” combines the ‘R’ for reading with ‘egg,’ making him the perfect ambassador for young learners—someone children could relate to, laugh with and trust on their reading adventure.
From those humble beginnings, Reggie has grown to become a beloved guide for millions of children around the world. Every child who cracks open ABC Reading Eggs takes the same journey—from tentative beginnings to confident reading—just like the story of Reggie himself.
